Country Overview

Fashion Law in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe’s fashion industry, centred in Harare, is driven by independent designers, tailoring culture, and a growing creative scene navigating limited formal structures. The sector reflects strong cultural expression, with many creatives building brands despite economic constraints.

However, the industry faces distinct structural challenges. The dominance of second-hand clothing imports and smuggling continues to undercut local designers and weaken the domestic textile sector. Currency instability and broader economic pressures also disrupt pricing, contracts, and long-term business planning, while informal markets often outperform formal retail due to lower costs and fewer regulations.

FLI Africa's Zimbabwe programme works with the local fashion community to strengthen legal awareness, promote structured and sustainable business practices, and advocate for policies that support a more stable, competitive, and inclusive fashion industry.
